BIBLE HILL - An annual bluegrass tradition will continue in Bible Hill next month.

The 41st annual Nova Scotia Bluegrass and Oldtime Music Festival will take place in the Agridome from July 27 to 29.

The event is hosted by the Downeast Bluegrass and Oldtime Music Society. The society's president Charles MacKenzie, of Crowes Mills, said the festival has been in Bible Hill for four years and has proven to be a success.

"It's centrally located and the Agridome protects from the weather," MacKenzie said, adding there were about 1,200 people at the event last year.

The society spends about $40,000 to bring in some popular bluegrass musicians. This year's featured band is Kati Penn and Newtown from Kentucky. One of the band members is vocalist and bassist Terry Poirier, son of New Brunswick legendary bluegrass musician Eddie Poirier.

There will be a number of performers throughout the weekend, including A New Shade of Blue and Bluegrass Tradition, Rustic Harmony.

"This is a market that is not being provided by many others. It's not mainstream but a lot of people enjoy it," said MacKenzie, adding more youth are getting involved in bluegrass festivals.

Although the majority of the entertainment will be that Friday to Sunday, there will be a Thursday night organized jam. The cost is $5.

There will also be performers and songwriters workshops, a children's program on Saturday afternoon and a Sunday morning church service with Bob Sharples and the Pioneers.

There will also be some camping on site. Festival tickets range from $10 to $50, depending on the day/days and advance or regular registration. Tickets are available at Ron's Hair Care and Mingo Music Sales in Truro and by calling MacKenzie at 662-2896.
