PICTOU – The Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Nova Scotia will present ‘The Gondoliers’ – a satiric tale of switched identities, mixed up royalty and the quest for true love – at the deCoste Centre in Pictou on Saturday.
‘The Gondoliers, or, The King of Barataria,’ was the 12th operetta written together by Gilbert and Sullivan. Opening on Dec. 7, 1889, at the Savoy Theatre, The Gondoliers ran for 554 performances, and was the last of the Gilbert and Sullivan productions that would achieve wide popularity.
The Nova Scotia Gilbert and Sullivan Society was founded in 1977 and this year celebrates its 35th anniversary. The society was founded by A. G. Scott Savage, a former member of the London based D’Oyly Carte Opera Company. In the society’s first four seasons, he was the musical director and the stage director. Each spring, the society presents a major production in Halifax, which is also taken on tour to other stages around the province. Tickets for ‘The Gondoliers’ are on sale now at the deCoste Box office or online and will be available at the door. The show starts at 7:30 p.m.
