HALIFAX - Defence Minister Peter MacKay says at least one of the navy ships stationed off Haiti will soon be returning to Canada.
HMCS Athabaskan and HMCS Halifax have been helping in the relief effort following a devastating earthquake last month.
MacKay says one of the vessels will be heading home within the next few weeks, but did not specify which one.
He says some of the equipment taken to Haiti on the vessels will remain in the country to help with water purification, road clearing, construction and medical treatment.
He says the return date will depend partly on the need in the impoverished country.
MacKay says the ships were there to provide emergency relief and that non-governmental aid agencies will remain to play a more long-term role.
