TRURO - The Cole Harbour Major Midgets will play a special game in Truro on Monday.
The team will play its final Nova Scotia Midget AAA Hockey League regular-season game against the Valley Wildcats (Colchester Legion Stadium, 7 p.m.) with proceeds from the contest going to a local hockey family - the Scotts. The game is a make-up for a Jan. 2 date that was cancelled due to weather.
Kathy Scott, the wife of John and mother of Spencer and Mitchell, lost her battle with cancer on Sunday. Spencer is a goaltender for Cole Harbour, while Mitchell is a defenceman. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students and seniors.
Cole Harbour head coach Steve Crowell arranged to have the game played in Truro, feeling the local hockey community would want to help.
"We just thought the family would still be home and it might be nice for them and the boys," Crowell said.
Admission and proceeds from a 50/50 draw will go to the family. Also, organizers are holding a bake sale and silent auction with proceeds also going to Scotts. The auction will include 50 items such as San Jose Sharks, Calgary Flames, Montreal Canadiens, Ottawa Senators and Truro Bearcats sweaters and some NHL gear. There will also be two Adirondack chairs from Derrick Perigo.
The junior A Bearcats have also jumped on board, donating their 50/50 proceeds from Saturday's tilt against the Dieppe Commandos. Crowell said response from the community is fitting of Scott's personality.
"Kathy was an awesome volunteer and fundraiser who was passionate about her boys hockey and baseball," Crowell said. "This game is a small way we can give back to Kathy's family after she had done so much for others for years.
Kathy's husband John has expressed a deep gratitude for holding the game in Truro and was very thankful to our organization for putting it together so quickly."
The Cole Harbour team, which currently sits second in the league with a 21-9-1-2 record, will wear a patch with the initials KS on their sweaters for the balance of this year in honour of Scott.
Anyone wishing to contribute to the bake sale or silent auction can contact Anne at ahp@eastlink.ca. Baked goods can be dropped off at the stadium on Monday after 4:30 p.m.
