NEW YORK - Where should the men accused of planning the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks be tried? Not here, say some New York City business and community leaders.
Even Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Wednesday that he would be "very happy" if federal officials decided to move the trial of professed Sept. 11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four accused accomplices.
Downtown Manhattan civic leaders and the Real Estate Board of New York say the trial should not take place in the federal courthouse in Lower Manhattan, which is just blocks from the World Trade Center site.
Community Board 1 Chairwoman Julie Menin says the Justice Department should consider "outside-the-box" ideas like the U.S. Military Academy at West Point or Governors Island in New York Harbor.
