SACKVILLE, N.B. - The RCMP are close to confirming the identity of the body found in a burned out car here Tuesday afternoon.
Sgt. Paul Ouellette said the east-bound vehicle failed to make a turn on Crescent Street around 1 p.m. Tuesday and collided with a gas tank at the public works building.
"We have confirmed who the owner of the vehicle is and have since learned that a gentleman from the area is missing," Sgt. Ouellette said Wednesday afternoon.
An autopsy is scheduled on the body today in Fredericton to determine the cause of death.
"We think we know the identity of the deceased, but we're waiting on the autopsy and dental records to confirm it."
Sgt. Ouellette said confirmation should come later in the day Thursday or even Friday morning. The family will be notified before the RCMP will announce the identity.
He also said he's not sure if the driver of the vehicle was the owner, but he did say the two were in the same family.
Following the accident, the RCMP inspected the vehicle for mechanical problems that may have caused the driver to not be able to stop.
Sgt. Ouellette said there were no problems that were found with the vehicle.
