NEW GLASGOW, N.S. - Two people walked away unhurt after their small plane crashed in woods Monday afternoon in Pictou County.
The white-and-green Cessna 177 appeared to clip the tops of some saplings and small fir trees before spinning to the ground on a low hill in the Little Egypt Road area.
Witnesses said it sounded like the plane was having engine trouble.
"I was wondering what they were doing," said witness Robert MacNeil, who hikes the woods off the Little Egypt Road daily.
"It was making a lot of noise with the engine. Then I thought they shut their engine off. I'm not sure what happened."
A Canadian Forces aircraft helped the Mounties locate the plane about a kilometre from the road. The pilot and a passenger were found uninjured at a nearby home.
RCMP Sgt. Phil Oliver called it "a controlled crash" into the trees.
"It appeared to be a relatively soft landing considering what happened," he said, but added the plane was seriously damaged.
The cause of the crash wasn't known.
The RCMP said investigators from the Transportation Safety Board will visit the crash site Tuesday.
