Special to The Record
To everyone in Springhill I hope 2010 will be excellent for everyone.
Due to the events from weeks ago and since it was on the news, we sustained a really bad hit but the troops here have their heads up and know what we have to do in regards to the mission. Our thoughts and prayers are with their families.
On a positive note I received the three large boxes of Kraft Dinner, hand made Christmas cards and some candy on January 4, from the Junction Road Elementary School and, wow, there was lots of Kraft Dinner.
My job takes me all over the place here and not stuck in one certain location for long periods and I believe that timing is everything. A really good friend and peer of mine, Sergeant C.J. Flach dropped by my office last week and he was heading back out to his area, he mentioned that the guys in Alpha Company would love the Kraft Dinner. Since I gave other companies some parcels that I have received from the IODE and other people, this was really good timing.
From everyone over here we want to thank everyone from the Junction Road Elementary School for their continued support. I gave out the cards the students made up for us and there was one special one that said "I hope you are having fun over there".
This kind of perked the guys ears towards the letter and we all said "Yes we are" and you have to have a sense of humour over here to keep things light despite what is going on over here. We are only human and being together for so long, staying focused and having a thousand things going through your head at times, you need to have that humour.
Laughter is, of course, the best medicine out there.
This is the letter that Sgt Flach wrote on behalf of the troops of Alpha Company 1 PPCLI:
To the Staff and Students of Junction Road Elementary School,
I am writing you to thank you for the many boxes of happiness you have sent us, meaning of course the boxes of Kraft Dinner. Mark had given these boxes to me to bring to our platoon house while we were in the main camp to complete some much required rest and maintenance.
We all had a pretty good Christmas Day here albeit short. We all gathered together as best as we could and shared a dinner and some laughs and thankfully we had a pretty quiet evening after that.
We are able to remain focused using the thoughts of our families back home during the holiday season, and with letters and packages from the many Canadians back home that so passionately support us while we are away. You will all be very happy to hear that the boxes of Kraft Dinner will be consumed with great joy and jubilations as we know it was collected and sent to us with nothing but the best of wishes to all that are here. It feels like a little piece of home when we get these little gifts from the people thinking of us.
So on behalf of everyone in A-Company 1 PPCLI Task Force-3-09 Battle Group forward deployed we thank each and every one of you for continuing to keep us in your thoughts and we will definitely be thinking of you while we enjoy your heartfelt gift. Enjoy the remainder of the winter and have some fun in the snow that is something we all miss with mixed emotions here as well.
Sgt C.J. Flach
