UPPER NAPPAN - While the snow quietly fell outside, Jesse Franklin James slept quietly in his mother's arms.
At seven pounds, seven ounces, Jesse was Cumberland County's first New Year's baby of 2010, born to proud parents Sharlene Duthie and Jesse Vallillee.
"Jesse was supposed to be born on Christmas Day, so it was exactly a week later," Duthie said while sitting in her room Saturday at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre.
"It's kind of exciting that he was born on New Year's Day."
Jesse is the first child for the couple, and came as a surprise to everyone, including the grandparents.
Duthie's mother, Barbara, was in the delivery room when her grandson was born.
"I never thought I'd be in the delivery room, I didn't think my nerves could handle it," she said while she rocked in a chair.
Duthie's parents travelled from Miramichi for the delivery. Vallillee's parents came from Ottawa for the birth.
"I'm happy he's finally here," said Duthie.
"My water broke at 12:55 p.m., while I was at Sobeys on Dec. 31. It was a natural delivery. I was begging for a C-section, but it didn't work out because I asked for it too late."
Jesse was born at 3:45 p.m., but he wasn't the only little bundle delivered in the unit on Friday.
Two others were welcomed - one at 8:52 p.m., and the other at 11:35 p.m.
Because Jesse was the first born on Friday, the Cumberland Health Care Auxiliary presented the family with a basket of goodies, something that has been done for a number of years.
The basket included diapers, receiving blankets, bibs, sleepers, hats, and a sleep positioner for the baby, as well as some goodies for the mom, including chocolates and magazines.

People need to get a life & get over it... it's about the first baby.. not the 3rd or 100th..

I hate the negativity in Amherst. Someone's always complaining.
