TRURO - Lois Parnham looked around at a steadily growing crowd on New Year's Eve and smiled.
The Green's Creek resident attended a New Year's Eve party at the former Douglas Street elementary school. As music by entertainers CJ and Bob Prest filled the room, giggles erupted from active children, couples danced to some lively tunes and people huddled by a large bonfire outdoors, it reminded Parnham just how special the holidays are and how time changes things.
"The big thing for New Year's that we used to do every year was make homemade molasses candy," said Parnham.
"That was about 60 years ago and we'd skate on the lake and have a bonfire."
Parnham now spends New Year's enjoying events organized by the Town of Truro. Although the passage of time changed the way she celebrates the beginning of a new year, the theme to her remains constant.
"The simpler the better and I always wish for good health."
Julie MacPhee, of New Glasgow, has a special wish for 2010 as well.
"I would like the war to end because my brother is supposed to go to Afghanistan in 2011," said MacPhee, who travelled from New Glasgow to Truro specifically for New Year's activities.
For Truro's Gertrude Fraser a new year represents hope.
"It's a new challenge and each day is a new day," Fraser said, adding with a laugh, "but another year of my life is gone."
In 2010, Fraser would like to see two specific things come to fruition.
"I'd like to see more get-togethers in the community and more activities for teenagers."
For Valley's Monique Prince, the celebration of a new year reminds her of the value of family and friends. It's also a chance to make positive differences in life.
"The new year is for turning over a new leaf."
One thing Prince won't be including in her new year is the making of resolutions.
"I would be disappointed with myself for not keeping them," she chuckled.
