TRURO - Celina and Mike Spence feel a sense of accomplishment when they reflect on the positive impact they have on the community.
The Bible Hill-based husband and wife duo operate Well Within Chiropractic: A Creating Wellness Centre in Truro. They have learned leading by example touches many people in the area, more and more of whom are looking for ways to lead a healthier lifestyle without the use of medications and surgery.
A native of Saskatchewan, 39-year-old Celina's passion for chiropractic services and wellness through diet, exercise and healthy mindsets began as a child.
"I had my first adjustment when I was 11 and it was so profound ... I couldn't believe the body could heal on its own," said Celina, who was dealing with a neck injury from basketball. She couldn't move her arms for six months and then after three chiropractic treatments she saw immediate improvements.
"I was always amazed at how the body heals ... so this solidified" the career path she would ultimately choose.
Mike, 36, originally from Bedford, also used a chiropractic approach as a youngster when he experience back problems due to hockey.
"It worked and I knew I wanted to be a decision-maker in regards to leading people to better health," he said.
Years later, Celina and Mike meet when they were studying at the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in Toronto.
They studied for their board exams in Truro in 2001 and fell in love with the area for its "family values," said Celina.
The couple opened their first practice, Armdale Chiropractic, in Halifax in 2001, followed by another practice by the same name in Truro in 2002. They expanded their services and changed the name to Well Within in 2007 and are located at the Fundy Trail Centre.
The business helps clients explore wellness through a variety of techniques such as eating well, exercise, chiropractic, massage, goal setting and accountability and smoking cessation to name a few.
"People say, 'you're in Truro?' They are surprised so much is offered here," said Mike.
"Atlantic Canada, and a small community like Truro, doesn't have to be, and shouldn't be, looked at as second best," said Celina. "We have all the opportunities (to implement) wellness here as people out West in bigger communities."
Because of the couple's pursuit
of wellness through their specialized clinic, they recently received an international wellness award for
their superior community impact on wellness.
