HALIFAX - A storm system swept into the Maritimes on Sunday, prompting snowfall and blowing snow warnings for much of southern Nova Scotia.
Environment Canada said six counties in the province - Digby, Yarmouth, Shelburne, Lunenburg, Halifax and Queens - were expecting 15 to 25 centimetres of snow.
There were also blowing snow warnings for those counties, making for treacherous driving in near zero visibility.
Lesser amounts of snow were expected in northern Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick.
The snow started before noon in southwestern Nova Scotia and had stretched eastward into the Halifax area by late afternoon.
There were numerous flight delays at Halifax Stanfield International Airport, along with several cancellations.
"The current weather conditions are impacting a lot of flights," said Ashley Barnes, a spokeswoman for the airport authority.
"We're advising everyone to check online or call their airline before actually heading out to the airport."
The airport's runways were being cleared constantly.
"We've got two crews who are working hard, around the clock, to keep both runways open," said Barnes.
Police in Halifax warned motorists to be careful on slippery, snow-covered streets.
