YARMOUTH, N.S. - The active search for a missing fishing boat and its captain was called off Thursday as rough weather enclosed the Bay of Fundy off Yarmouth.
Maj. James Simiana of the search and rescue centre in Halifax said crews had covered a broad area but the time frame for possible survival had passed, even though the missing man was wearing an immersion suit.
"All avenues have been exhausted. The area has been extensively searched," said Simiana.
"Regrettably, now we're beyond the survival capability of the individual given the water and the weather conditions."
The search has been hampered by high winds, up to six-metre seas and snow squalls that have limited visibility at times.
Simiana says Canadian military aircraft from Greenwood, N.S., and a radar-equipped jet from the U.S. Coast Guard covered an area of about 400 square kilometres without any trace of debris.
Three other crew members were rescued from a life-raft after the 17-metre Pubnico Explorer sank Wednesday morning.
The matter has been turned over to the RCMP as a missing persons case.
