OTTAWA - A series of chain-reaction crashes blamed on thick fog have shut down a stretch of Highway 416 northbound near Ottawa.
The pileups began just before 8 a.m. and a rescue worker says about 32 vehicles are involved in one crash, and up to 40 in another, south of the city.
At least three people have been taken to hospital and Ottawa transit buses have been called in to remove stranded motorists.
The southbound route is down to one lane to allow emergency crews access to vehicles in the northbound crashes.
The highway is slated to be closed for several hours.
