HALIFAX - Ottawa is contributing $4.2 million toward improved housing in First Nations communities in Nova Scotia and to creating a proposed Mi'kmaq cultural centre and trail network in the centre of the province.
About $3.8-million in federal funds will help build new housing, repair and improve existing non-profit housing, and complement housing programs offered by CMHC over the next two years.
The housing agency says it will retrofit 229 housing units on First Nation communities, and the funding will also subsidize 12 new housing units in seven communities.
In addition, the federal government announced its stimulus funding will provide $400,000 for the planning of a native cultural centre and trail in Debert, with Nova Scotia's government kicking in $137,000.
The centre will showcase Mi'kmaq history and culture, and is billed as being focused around the oldest dated archaeological site in Canada.
The project will enable the Confederacy of Mainland Mi'kmaq to undertake the detailed site assessment and planning required prior to the construction of the centre on 450 hectares of land.
