PARRSBORO - Lois Smith became Parrsboro's first-ever female mayor, with a convincing victory over three male candidates in a special by-election on Saturday night.
Smith claimed victory with 430 votes, while former mayor Stanford Blenkhorn finished with 275 votes. Ron Levy received 46 votes, while second-time candidate Joel Smith received 13.
Parrsboro had been without a mayor since September, when former mayor Doug Robinson stepped down due to illness. He passed away the following month.
In the race for the lone council seat vacated by Smith last month, it was another female candidate, Lisa Ward, who claimed victory over four other candidates. The Ship's Company Theatre administrator received 190 votes, followed by Gleneida Canning with 173, Troy Melanson with 168, Lloyd Smith with 131 and Ralph Foster with 81.
