TRURO - Changes are being implemented to improve safety at one of Nova Scotia's largest high school.
Effective immediately, parking in front of Cobequid Education Centre, on the south side of Lorne Street, will not be permitted. It is enforcing a law that has always been on the books.
"In the past we've always let the parents stop and park to pick up their children," said Truro Police Service's Const. Karen DeGroot, the school resource officer.
"Unfortunately, it's just creating such a traffic issue and it is very difficult for the buses to exit the school with cars parked on both sides of the road... it's quite dangerous."
She said it is a safety issue for the roughly 1,6000 students entering and leaving the school on a daily basis.
"It's very congested down here (but) only for a short period, usually," DeGroot said.
New signs will be posted reminding motorists parking will be prohibited between 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The best place for people to drop off or pick up students is in the Colchester Legion Stadium parking lot with access on both North and Lorne streets.

While they are at it they should tell those bus drivers to slow down because they travel way toooo fast in and out of the area .So if they park at the stadium they will have to walk in front of those fast moving buses .

My only question is why the Truro Police have let the situation decay to this point? If there is no parking in these areas and they are clearly signed that way then why not enforce the law from day one?

People who are complaining about this have no right to do so as they've been lucky so far. Just another example of how this town is backward in many many ways.

Hmmm now i beleave this is a good step in the right direction. Now if only the Truro Jounior high School would enforce their parking lot rules and not allow people to park on the curb side of the shcool where it clearly says no parking. We dont know how many time we complained about picking up or children at that school when people are parked along the side and the kids have to doodge traffic and walk between cars to get to the parking lot.Maybe Const. Karen Degroot can go up there and talk to them about saftey of our kids.

Perhaps the Principal could park elsewhere as well.

Actually Gas Man, there are already existing signs at that location. New signs are being added to the few older existing signs. Try actually being familiar with a location before you comment on an article.
