HALIFAX - Halifax-area councillors have unanimously approved a policy to restrict the use of tobacco outdoors on municipal property where children are present.
There are about 480 outdoor places in the Halifax Regional Municipality where the new policy will apply.
Those places include sports fields, playgrounds, beaches, swimming pools and skateboard parks.
The new rules won't be in effect for two months, to allow a public education plan to be rolled out.
The edict follows a poll in which about 80 per cent of 400 people surveyed last year expressed strong support for complete restriction of smoking in outdoor spaces such as parks and playgrounds.
