MILLBROOK - There is a disagreement between the band and the town regarding the cost of paving Willow Street through Millbrook.
In September, Truro town council was told by staff the paving project was estimated to cost $200,000 more this fiscal year due to more planning and/or paving to match the grades of new curb, gutter and sidewalk being installed.
The sidewalk work was not scheduled to take place until 2012 under the town's master plan. But the band decided to finance the project upfront with the town repaying the money in its 2012 budget year.
The band did not want to see the asphalt dug up in a few years time for sidewalk and sewer pipe construction.
"We're not costing the town any more money for these projects at all, at any stage," said band administrator Alex Cope. "Our opinion is we're saving them money by doing it the proper way."
But the town contends the paving project is going to cost more this year than its original $364,000 estimate.
"It's going to be very close to whether we're going to be marginally over our budget or a lot over our budget," said Andrew MacKinnon, the town's director of public works.
One thing both sides appear to agree on is doing the two projects together was the right decision in the big picture.
"When you look at everything altogether what they have done is very proactive and could save everybody money in the long run," Williams said.
Both sides say they have a good working relationship and have been able to collaborate on a number of projects during the past few years.
"Each one has their own interpretation and it is something to be sat down and negotiated," said Raymond Tynes, Ward 1 town councillor. "I am sure at the end of the day, as reasonable people, we will come to some kind of agreement."
