TRURO - Comments were positive when visitors toured the new public works building in Truro on Saturday.
Many people took the opportunity to see the facility, which is located on Glassey Avenue, during the grand opening.
"It's beautiful," said Truro's Peter MacNeal. "This has been a long time coming. I never realized it was so big. It is well-planned and has lots of space for the future. I am very impressed. I think it is just wonderful compared to the old building. This will be good for morale and improve production."
Betty Carrigan toured the facility with her sons, Mike and Don. They were all impressed with the new building.
"It's lovely," she said. "I am sure the fellows will be glad to be in a warm place this winter. I was never inside the old building, but this one certainly looks much nicer on the outside. They've needed a new building for quite a few years."
Two people who attended the grand opening worked for the town for many years, as former Mayor Doug Carter and former town engineer Ken Thompson participated in the event.
"This is beautiful," said Thompson. "I never thought I'd see something like this. I'm 93 now so I've been waiting for this for a while."
Carter echoed Thompson's sentiments on the building's appearance.
"They did an excellent job," he said. "We had so many things going on before that we only got to the stage where we decided the old building would have to come down and a new one should be built. It's great to see this here."
Andrew MacKinnon, director of public works, said the town has always prided itself on how well it takes care of its equipment, and the new facility will allow it to do that even better.
"We keep the equipment here to look after 100 kilometers of roads and sidewalks, and sewer and water mains, as well as about 600 fire hydrants," he said. "The building will be used by 25 full time and 25 seasonal employees."
