ST. JOHN'S - Transportation and Works Minister Trevor Taylor announced his retirement from politics Thursday, saying he's leaving after nine years of public life for personal reasons and to take a new job.
Taylor told reporters he will work for an organization involved with fisheries management and sustainable ecosystems in the Arctic in light of climate change.
Taylor also spoke about the impact politics had on his personal life.
"It took a heavy toll on my family to the point where I lost part of it, you could say," he said, his eyes welling up. "I'm going to try to get that back now."
Taylor resigned from cabinet just prior to holding a news conference but said he will stay on as Conservative member for The Straits-White Bay North until next Friday.
Williams said he respected his minister's decision.
He added he hoped to name an acting transportation minister within days, but would wait to fill the job permanently.
