WINNIPEG - A woman was browsing through raffle prizes at a crowded wedding reception shortly before midnight Saturday night when a gunman burst in spraying bullets - killing her and injuring two other guests.

Cheryl Robert, 50, was shot in the head and died later in hospital.

Police said at least one gunman slipped into the rear entrance of the Polish Combatants Association Club and opened fire on the crowd, after the couple had exchanged their vows.

The woman's common-law husband, 50, and a 31-year-old woman were treated in hospital and released, said Staff Sgt. Andrew Smith.

The newlyweds - identified as ``Jason and Angel' - were celebrating with about 100 friends and family members at the time of the shooting.

``We just heard the gunshots and (the woman) went down,' said the bride's brother, Trevor Raven, who was standing next to the victim. ``Then the guy - he got hit and he (slumped) over.'

Raven's wife, Sheila Sinclair, ran to check the woman's pulse and said another guest started CPR before paramedics arrived.

Raven said his sister is ``traumatized' by the violence on her wedding day. She stood outside the club in her white gown before police escorted her past the yellow tape to a nearby cruiser.

Another witness, Gail Kwyeriga, said she thought balloons were popping when the shooting started and she ducked to the floor when she realized people were hurt.

``I just wanted to know where my kids were,' she said. ``We all huddled down on the floor.'

All guests were taken from the area of the attack by transit buses and police have been interviewing witnesses.

Police have not yet made any arrests.
