NEW GLASGOW, N.S. - A former math teacher and town councillor in Trenton, N.S., has been sentenced to four months in jail for touching a girl for a sexual purpose.
Court heard that Robert Brian Jones, 40, began an inappropriate relationship with the girl when he started emailing and instant messaging her in the spring of 2007, when she was 16 years old.
In one exchange, Jones told the girl "he would be in serious trouble, implying he could lose his job, for just chatting over the Internet and the victim promised to keep their conversations a secret," according to an agreed statement of facts.
It goes on to say that Jones kissed the girl for the first time in the fall of 2007 and inappropriately touched her on a number of occasions after that.
The statement says he also had sexual intercourse with the girl in a classroom at Pictou Academy, where he worked.
In a victim impact statement read by the girl's mother, the girl said Jones told her she was "pretty, sexy and thought about (her) all the time."
In February 2008, the girl was in his math and law class and the two continued to see each other and "make out."
The girl told her parents what had happened in late April 2008 and charges were laid against Jones shortly afterward. He pleaded guilty to the charge in March.
Judge Theodore Tax agreed on Wednesday to the joint sentencing recommendation from the Crown and the defence.
Jones has been fired from his job as a teacher and stripped of his teaching licence.
