Former N.S. health minister Gerald Sheehy dies suddenly at age 85

HALIFAX - Gerald Sheehy, a veterinarian who went on to become a Nova Scotia cabinet minister in the 1970s and '80s, has died.

Sheehy died suddenly on Monday in Middleton, N.S., where he lived.

He was 85.

Sheehy entered public life in 1965 as a Middleton town councillor and deputy mayor and in 1970 was elected to the Nova Scotia legislature as Conservative member for Annapolis East.

He served as health minister for then-Premier John Buchanan from 1978 until he retired from politics in 1985.

Sheehy also served as registrar general and minister of agriculture and marketing.
