VALLEY - Art Hartlen has been acclaimed as the Colchester North NDP candidate for the upcoming provincial election.
The Valley resident, and a plumber by trade, said he is ready to stand up for families in Colchester North. He believes many residents in the riding know "they are being hosed" by the Tories, who made millions of dollars in spending announcements in the pre-election period.
"Residents understand that the current MLA, Rodney MacDonald's team player, Karen Casey, can't keep Tatamagouche hospital's emergency room open so people can get the emergency care they need when they need it.
"It's appalling that the emergency room at the Lillian Fraser Memorial Hospital has been closed for over 50 hours since the election was called. Karen Casey and Rodney MacDonald should both be ashamed this has been happening in this riding for so long. They have had plenty of time to fix it and it's clear they cannot."
Hartlen said solving emergency room closures, fixing roads and highways, keeping young people in Nova Scotia, creating jobs and looking after seniors are of utmost importance.
"Frankly, the Tories have had a shot, and if they could have fixed things then we would not be in as bad a shape as many people think we are."
Hartlen added his party's platform will benefit families "... especially to boost new home construction to keep 3,000 to 5,000 skilled jobs here in Nova Scotia. For families this will mean up to $7,000 off the price of a new homes, and for young trades people, this will provide a boost to jobs hurt by the recession."
