HALIFAX - Nova Scotia's NDP says it plans to improve access to emergency care by spending $2.3 million dollars on three measures including the creation of a position of emergency care adviser.
Party Leader Darrell Dexter says the advisor, most likely a doctor, will look at ways to best distribute existing resources including doctors and nurses to ensure that pressure is taken off the system.
Towards that end the New Democrats say they will also open three assessment beds to keep the Cobequid Health Centre in Hammonds Plains - Upper Sackville open 24 hours a day.
The health centre currently closes from 10 p.m. until 7 a.m. and the NDP says that creates extra strain on emergency rooms in Halifax.
Dexter says keeping the suburban ER open would have a "ripple effect" through the system.
Under a bill proposed in the legislature last week, the NDP says it would also require district health authorities to consult with communities in areas where there are chronic ER closures.

$2.3 million is just the start. Can't be done for this amount. Just filling the ER's with Drs will take double that.

Hagel stayed in Nova Scotia. Zann was in New York applying for an acting job when the b**b story broke. Which job will she turn down if offered- Law & Order or MLA.....Enquiring minds want to know......

Dexter has to HIRE someone to do this because he picks movie stars to be his cabinet.

If no doctors were willing to run for the NDP doesn't that say something about their health plan?

Typical NDP B.S. Where does Dexter purpose to get the 2.3 million ??? No plan, just empty promises to bring us further in debt. The NDP are scary and the tory's are crooks. MCNeil and the Liberals keep looking better, Hagell and Versteeg are strong local candidates.

So Bruce, your justification of Zann not living here for decades is that she was virtually never far away? You've got to be kidding me... Would you say the same thing about Ignatieff? Probably not.

Look at Hagell's resume, it has Justice Minister written all over it. The only thing Dexter (her leader) could say about Zann was that she was a strong community person. That's all she gets from her leader! Speaks volumes to the quality difference between the two candidates. I'm sure she's a nice person and a good actress but I don't want her doing my bidding in Halifax...

SO JACK the point was what makes Bob Who? a LOCAL BOY---everyone keeps going on about riding specific knowledge and contacts being so important---this beside the fact that most people are praised for having the initiative and talent to follow their career path to it's fullest extent,
Halifax is not Truro,Shubenacadie is not either, with phone and internet Lenore was never further away (virtually) than your local boy .
Laughable.next a Halifaxer will be parachuted into here to run for you fiberals and you'll all cheer him/her on !

2.3 million won't solve any ER problems. Maybe for a week end. Hec, pardon the pun, with the price of asphalt, that won't even fill the potholes on the roads leading to the hospitals. Did you notice the three boobs on the NDP signs in Truro Bible Hill? Too many boobs in the NDP. Did you notice this paper didn't allow comments on this mornings NDP storey about turning TO orange? Must be NDP boobs working at the Daily News too. Don't get me started on the Liberals. Remember Anderson...too too many tories in Truro Bible Hill.

Homer - have you seen Jamie's budget? And how about Karen's emergency room closures?

There's a reason we need to replace these cons with people who know what they're doing.

Explain what makes Hagel a local boy??
I haven't seen where he spent any more time in this riding than Lenore Zann has.
Enlighten me ,and I'll learn something.
Both went to CEC,went on in their careers, and returned to Truro.

This is the biggest farce of an idea that I have seen in some time! He's providing non-solutions to the ER problems in NS. Dexter... thanks but no thanks!
