ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - Police in St. John's say they followed procedure when an officer drew his gun as he approached a developmentally delayed teenager carrying a toy machine gun in the city.
Royal Newfoundland Constabulary spokesman Const. Paul Davis says two officers in two patrol cars responded to 911 calls of a youth carrying a weapon.
The officer who approached the 18-year-old, developmentally delayed boy was carrying his own weapon at the ready from about 40 metres away, Davis says.
Davis says the officer responded to a call about a gun, approached from a distance, believing the gun was real and he was dealing with an adult man.
Davis says considering the circumstances, the officer did exactly as he was trained.
