TRURO - A large crack in the floor under the ice surface at Colchester County's biggest rink is evident.
The crack runs the width of the ice near the centre line at Colchester Legion Stadium. And there are more.
But the Town of Truro is planning extensive renovations this summer to fix the problem.
"We really have no option at all," Mayor Bill Mills told the Truro Daily News on Tuesday. "(The crack) is getting more and more noticeable... The thing could break at any time."
The stadium was built in 1965 and needs upgrades.
"It is still one of the better stadiums in Nova Scotia so we're just going to give it some TLC," Mills said. "It's been a pretty good, faithful servant of the Colchester area for many years so it deserves a good facelift."
The town issued a request for expressions of interest for contractors to replace the
concrete floor under the ice as well as the boards. Submissions must be received by Friday, April 3.
"We have to get going because it's basically going to shut the rink down for the summer. We have a very short window to do this," Mills said.
"We're hoping that we can start work right after the home show is done."
The work is also expected to see the ice surface move about 10 feet towards the back of the building to expand the foyer in the entrance.
"When you walk into the front of the Colchester Legion Stadium right now, particularly during playoff games, it's pretty crowded," Mills admitted. "If we can gain 10 feet it's certainly going to make it a little more palpable when you walk in and more presentable."
The project, estimated to cost more than
$1 million, is also expected to deal with
accessibility issues and make the stadium more efficient.
The money will come from the civic centre project. "They are two separate projects but one pool of money," Mills said.
