CHARLOTTETOWN - Hundreds of Islanders have wasted little time lining up for new life-saving drugs that were added just weeks ago to the list of medications covered by the province.
The government has received over 250 authorization requests for drugs for maladies including cancer, osteoporosis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
The province announced Feb. 19 it will spend $1.6 million to add 18 new drugs to the list of treatments paid for by the public purse.
Almost three-quarters of the funding is being allocated to high-cost cancer drugs.
An official says that of the 250-plus requests received to date, 85 per cent have been approved.
Close to 1,200 Islanders are expected to qualify for coverage of the new drugs.
