TRURO - Colchester County's largest ice surface may be in line for some upgrades this summer.
The Town of Truro has informed customers of the Colchester Legion Stadium the facility may not be available during the warmer months.
That list of clients includes the Truro and Area Minor Lacrosse Association, which will be moving its operations to the Don Henderson Memorial Sportsplex in Brookfield.
The stadium is also rented during the
summer for special activities like the circus and also houses the annual bike rodeo and other activities.
"We've advised all groups that we do not expect to be open this summer," said recreation director Doug MacKenzie. "We wanted to do that so they could make alternate arrangements."
The annual home show will still take place April 24 to 26 at the stadium as it happens shortly after the ice is removed.
Currently no renovations have been approved for the stadium but are expected to be in the town's budget later this year.
Council received a consultant's report last March showing renovations at the stadium, built in 1965, would cost between $2.16 million and $18.5 million depending on what the town chooses to do.
The least expensive option would see the ice surface replaced, as well as the addition of boards, refrigeration plant and accessible washrooms. The report showed the concrete floor is cracking and could be an urgent issue.
Renovations to the stadium are a part of the civic centre project, planned by the town and county.
An energy audit was recently completed at the stadium.
"There are some things we can do to help us save some energy and become more efficient," said Mayor Bill Mills.
