CHANNEL-PORT AUX BASQUES, N.L. A town on the southwestern tip of Newfoundland declared a state of emergency Tuesday because of a broken water line that has left residents with little or no water pressure for three days.
Brian Button, mayor of Channel-Port aux Basques, said his town of 4,300 has been coping with inadequate water pressure since Sunday.
Its becoming an urgency now, Button said in an interview.
Mother Nature is co-operating with us today and I understand that it will probably be co-operating with us tomorrow, but we live in Newfoundland so that can change in a heartbeat.
Crews have been unable to find the source of the water leak so far, but they suspect its located along a one-kilometre stretch of road in town and involves a water main, Button said.
Its becoming very difficult for us because normally when you have a water leak, you have water flowing to the surface, he said.
Up to this point weve had no visible area where weve been able to identify where water may be coming out.
Two schools and a college campus have been closed since Monday because of the broken water line and a local hospital is making arrangements to transfer patients to other hospitals, Button added.
The provinces emergency measures organization has been enlisted to help determine the source of the leak and rectify the problem, he said.
