ST. JOHNS, N.L. About 100 people turned out today in St. Johns to protest the ongoing violence in the Gaza Strip.

The protesters gathered in a downtown park to condemn Israels military action in the region.

They also called for an end to violence on both sides.

Kassem Abouchehade, president of the Muslim Student Association at Memorial University, says the death toll had been disproportionate, with more than 1,200 Palestinians dying during the past three weeks.

Thirteen Israelis died during the offensive, including four killed by rocket fire.

Hamas offered Israel an immediate weeklong truce Sunday, hours after Israel silenced its guns and grounded its aircraft.
