TRURO - A Truro town councillor wants to ensure repairs to sidewalks occur as needed this winter after a constituent fell in December.
Sharron Byers said a friend tripped in a hole on a sidewalk on Wood Street.
"Her whole face was black and blue," the Ward 3 councillor said Monday during town council's January meeting. "It totally destroyed her Christmas."
The woman also damaged four teeth during the incident and could not leave her home for a week following the fall.
Byers said the incident raised the issue of the number of sidewalks the town has and the repairs needed as it heads towards preparing the upcoming budget.
"Obviously, when you see what can happen if we're not going to be able to maintain our sidewalks it was quite scary," she said.
Byers said the hole has since been fixed but wants to ensure other repairs are done in a timely fashion so others do not have to go through the same situation.
Director of public works Andrew MacKinnon assured councillors staff could repair any problem areas that arise and ask them to bring them to staff's attention. He said the town could use quick dry concrete to correct any problems during the winter.
Coun. Ray Tynes also asked if enough salt or sand is being spread on the sidewalks. "I don't want anybody falling down and getting hurt," he said.

The streets and sidewalks in Truo are a mess. The condition of the roads/streets and sidewalks are obivious to everyone. Why don't people speak up? being passive doesn't fix the potholes and broken concrete. I visit twice a year and each time I see the town looking shabbier and the streets worse than my last visit. I wonder why this is not a priority along with the Inglis Street issue

ya the side walks are a mess , and it would hurt for the town to get off there butt and plow and salt the side walks eather , i walk to work every day and im always having close calls from slipping on ice ,its funny i always see the town of truro sitting close to a tim hortons, mabe they sholud devote that time to putting some salt on the side walks.
or mabe they dont care a bout the elderly people who have to use there feet for transportation , what if one of them fall .. yes town ,that was a hint salt the damb side walks..

give me a break,we all know the only reason that sidewalk was fixed so fast is because, you are a councillor, and if that was anybody else, they would tell you to watch where you are walking the next time, and laugh at you or ask if you were drinking at the time, and besides you have to be aware of you surroundings at all times(didn't that person learn that in school????)
