SPRINGHILL The comfort of motorists stranded in the future are receiving a helping hand from clients at the Golden Opportunity Vocational Rehabilitation Centre here in Springhill.

Comfort kits, emergency supplies in the event of a lengthy roadside delay, were being put together yesterday at the Springhill Industrial Park facility, a new contract for the GOVRC under the Nova Scotia Dept. of Public Works. Awarding the contract to rehabilitation centres like the GOVRC and the Ark in Lunenburg is beneficial to the communities, clients and the department, which calls on the same facilities for contracts to make things like survey stakes, Public Works executive director Greg Lusk said.

Its very attractive to us because they get things done, Lusk said. They are more than accommodating when we need them.

The comfort kits, in contrast to an emergency survival kit, are designed to make a lengthy delay in traffic more bearable, Nova Scotia Minister of Highways Murray Scott says. The kits are just one of the recommendations the minister received after a motor vehicle accident during an unexpected snowstorm stranded motorists on the Cobequid Pass for more than 15-hours.

Working with the provinces Emergency Measures Officer Bruce Langille the kits were designed and will be distributed to the highways folks, the West Chester Fire Station will have some, emergency response and RCMP, Scott said.

Each kit contains an emergency blanket, tissues, glow stick, matches, water, an energy bar and a candle.

One candle gives off a surprising amount of heat, Lusk said. Youll still be cold but youll be alive.

Over 1,000 kits will be made and distributed in the area and the pilot project could become a province-wide opportunity. Two GOVRC staff were trained at days-end to piece the kits together and an addition seven will be added for the assembly.

The kits have a five-year shelf life determined by the expiry of the bottled water and energy bar.
