TRURO - Town town council has approved a residential care facility for Henry Street following a three-hour discussion last night.
The development agreement will allow the Colchester Residential Services Society (CRSS) to build a one-storey, 2,800-square foot home at 24 Henry St. to house up to 10 residents.
"We have no intentions of building three homes on the property. We're building one home," said CRSS executive director Shannon McLellan, dispelling some rumours that had circulated in the east end neighbourhood.
The society has provided opportunities for meaningful community inclusion for people with a wide range of disabilities in the Truro area for more than 30 years.
"This is a replacement home. It's not an expansion of services. All the people that are going to be living in this home are currently in our care now," said McLellan.
She said the residents work, volunteer and shop in the community as well as being a part of church and social groups.
The residents range in age from 20 to 41.
About 25 Henry Street area residents turned out for the hearing. Some said they were supportive of the plan for the home in their neighbourhood, but had concerns with the size of the project.
"The facility is too large as proposed and it's not a good fit," said Doug Neil, an Aberdeen Street resident who raised many concerns during his 33-minute address to council.
He also asked what would stop the society from building more facilities on the 2.7-acre property in the future. Solicitor John Rafferty said any further development would need to be approved by council through the same process.
Henry Street resident Jim Moore said the process has been an "unbelievable nightmare" from the beginning as the story continued to change as people talked about the proposal. But he was pleased with the information he received last night.
The development is subject to a 14-day appeal period from the time it is advertised.
