AMHERST Before the 1st annual Nova Scotia Fibre Arts Festival drew to a close this past weekend, a group of five ladies gathered at the Amherst Regional High School for a class on book-making.

Cynthia McCarthy, an art teacher at ARHS, conducted the tutorial on what she described as a few folds and a few cuts placed in strategic areas.

Book arts are a new art form theyre a popular art form and we are today looking at some simple ways of making a book, McCarthy said from her ARHS classroom on Saturday morning. From making a book out of one page, with certain folding and cutting, to a simple stitched journal, books can be more than just two covers and the pages as we know them.

The beginners class, which was host to four students, was focused on creatively constructing books using just a single sheet of paper.

McCarthy said the art form peaks her interest because of all different kinds of paper now widely available various colours, sizes, textures, etc. She said its an art thats growing in popularity, comparing it to another current fad scrapbooking.

A lot of people are into scrapbooking now, but this would be making the book from scratch themselves, she said.

Its not complicated.
