FORT MCMURRAY, Alta. A contract worker appears to have drowned in a tailings pond at an oilsands site in northern Alberta.

RCMP say they were called to the Horizon project operated by Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. and found the companys emergency crews already there.

Police say it appears the man was trapped under water after some equipment he was operating fell on him.

A recovery team was called in and found the body.

Occupational Health and Safety is heading an investigation into the death.

Last year, two Chinese labourers died when a tank collapsed at the Canadian Natural Resources project site.
