SPRINGHILL: Theres a new face behind the principals desk at Nova Scotia Community Colleges Cumberland Campus.

After nine years at the helm of the Tantramar Regional High School in Sackville, N.B., Don McCormack said there were two reasons for making the jump from high school to college academia and they both had to do with the excitement of working in post-secondary academics.

Its innovative, flexible and responsive to the needs of the community McCormack said. I would say the 21 Century student is changing and has changed and we have to make change for the students.

Seeing this evolution on the front lines of the high school hallways, McCormack says he feels he has a leg-up on the changing needs and roles of students and post-secondary education. Building on the successes of the Cumberland Campus in the past three years, McCormack says he sees the college becoming more multi-faceted towards not only developing new skill-sets but also continuing education within Cumberland Countys economy.

Local economics and manufacturers are leaning more towards ongoing training and the Cumberland Campus is in a positive position to become part of the on-going training process, McCormack says, setting the stage for NSCC and the Cumberland Campus in Springhill to become the centre of life-long learning.

We have an opportunity to serve areas where we havent served before. This, the Cumberland Campus, will always be the centre but we can expand our reach.
