Great turnout for annual bazaar

Advocate Harbour - The community of Advocate celebrated over the weekend with a bazaar in support of the Bayview Health Care Foundation.

In addition to the bazaar, a parade was also held on Saturday as well as a variety show on Thursday and an auction Friday evening. All of the events took place at Advocate District High School. A total of $8,400 was raised.

"Every year it gets bigger and better," said Don Fletcher, president of the foundation.

Bayview Memorial Health Care Centre first opened in 1945. A new facility was built in 1989. The centre houses 10 beds, including eight long-term care beds.

The centre also has an outpatient department that services Advocate and surrounding communities, as well as a laboratory, dietary, asthma clinic, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and diabetes education.

Advocate is one of 11 sites in Nova Scotia to enter into a collaborative practice arrangement with a physician and a nurse practitioner.

One of the main fundraising goals of the Bayview Health Care Foundation has been to contribute to the upkeep of the residence/office used by doctors and nurses who have come and gone.

The residence was recently sold at the end of July.

"Whenever an expansion needs to be done at the health centre the community is expected to raise 25 per cent of the cost so the money raised this weekend will go towards our next expansion at the centre," said Fletcher.

Fletcher says he hopes that expansion comes soon.

"The health minister made an announcement a few years ago that we would be getting some additional beds but we're still waiting," said Fletcher.

"We had a great turnout this weekend," said Fletcher.

"Thank you to everyone who participated. We hope to see you again next year."
