ST. JOHNS, N.L. The Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association says a meeting held today to discuss the possible resignations of three disgruntled cancer specialists was only an information session.

Association president Elizabeth Callahan confirms that she met with Health Minister Ross Wiseman and Cathy Popadiuk, one of three gynecologic oncologists.

The trio represent the provinces only gynecologic oncologists specialists who treat cancers of the female reproductive organs.

The three have complained about their working conditions and the fact that they earn less than their colleagues in every other province.

Callahan stressed the goal of the meeting was not to resolve the dispute, which erupted amid a public inquiry into botched breast cancer testing in the province.

Popadiuk and the two other oncologists Patti Power and Lesa Dawson have submitted resignations that will take effect Oct. 7 unless conditions improve.
