Another step taken toward clean up of the Sydney tar ponds

SYDNEY, N.S. A new contract has been awarded to a Nova Scotia company to contain the polluted groundwater under a section of the infamous Sydney tar ponds site in Cape Breton.

SYDNEY, N.S. A new contract has been awarded to a Nova Scotia company to contain the polluted groundwater under a section of the infamous Sydney tar ponds site in Cape Breton.

The Sydney Tar Ponds Agency says Hazco Environmental Services of Sydney will be given $800,000 to build underground cut-off walls to keep water from leaving the coke ovens site.

The walls will be built along the north and south sides of the 68-hectare property.

The north wall will be made from a soft clay and water mixture, while the south wall will be made from clay.
