OTTAWA - Two young women were in induced comas after the third-floor apartment balcony they were standing on collapsed.
The pair were among five girls and one man who were on the patio when it crashed to the ground Saturday night.
Martine d'Aragon, 19, and Heidi Perras, 20 - both Sherbrooke University students - fell to the pavement and were hit by the patio after landing.
The four others on the balcony were taken to hospital and released.
Shawna Bickford, 19, said there was no warning.
The six friends had all attended high school together and were hugging and snapping pictures just before the balcony collapsed.
Bickford and Vicky Perreault, who just moved into the apartment on May 1, landed on the second floor balcony and were able to break a window into that vacant unit, get upstairs and call 911.
Neighbours said they could hear the crash from blocks away.
Ottawa police are investigating to see if anyone is criminally responsible or negligent.
