PARRSBORO: Less than two months away from July 1st Canada Day fireworks and Parrsboro's Fireworks committee is sitting $2,000 shy of their $5,000 goal for the annual event.
The committee held a slow pitch softball tournament in Parrsboro over the May long weekend (May 16 - 18) that included the tournament, a dance and canteen sales during the tournament. The event raised $1,300 towards the fireworks.
"With the tournament that put us somewhere in the $3,000 range. We will be raffling tickets with first prize being three lawn chairs and second place will receive five pounds of lobster," committee treasurer Ann Marie Tupper said.
"Our committee chair Karla Fulton also submitted applications for two grants the committee became aware were available for communities to help with funding on community events," Tupper said.
The treasurer also said the committee still waiting for responses from their annual letter writing campaign canvassing businesses within Parrsboro and surrounding area along with people can take their recyclables to Durant's recycling depot and donate your recyclable funds towards the fireworks.
"I believe we will be able to reach our $5,000 target, events such as the passing of the boot during the fireworks generates roughly $400 - $500 each year, but if we had more volunteers I'm confident we could exceed that amount which would certainly help pay for the fireworks and get a good start towards next year's fireworks," Tupper said.
"The Canada Day fireworks committee could really use extra helping hands, especially during events like the passing of the boot and ball tournaments. It's a lot of work for four people and when your trying to organize an event it can be tiring when you only have four people involved with the organizing and the running of the event," the treasurer said.
Members of the fireworks committee the public can contact to become involved with this much enjoyed annual event held in Parrsboro in celebration of Canda Day are; Chair Karla Fulton, Treasurer Ann Marie Tupper, Secretary Vicki Clarke and Committee Member Linda Taggart.
