Pooches ready to compete
AMHERST - Joann Dnistransky is busy preparing herself and her two Samoyeds, Chivas and Tally, for the Tantramar Kennel Club Dog Show. The event takes place this weekend at the Tantramar Regional Civic Centre in Sackville, N.B.
Over 175 dogs and owners from across Canada and parts of the United States are expected to attend.
"It really is a love of the sport for me," said Dnistransky, secretary of the Tantramar Kennel Club, who has been involved in the sport for roughly 13 years.
"It's hard to remember what it was like not having dogs around," added Dnistransky.
There will be eight different shows taking place over the course of the weekend, four confirmation shows and four obedience shows.
During confirmation dogs are scored on different factors including proportion, angles and movement. During obedience dogs are scored on their ability to understand commands and pay close attention.
Four 'best in show' prizes will be awarded for confirmation as well as four 'highest in trial' prizes for obedience.
"I would encourage anyone who loves animals to come and watch. It's a lot of fun and it's a great opportunity, especially for people who are thinking about getting a dog, to come and ask questions," said Dnistransky.
This year the show will host the National Samoyeds Specialty event, which is held at different locations across Canada every year.
"There will be 25 Samoyeds taking part. We are very excited to be hosting the event this year," said Dnistransky.
The Tantramar Kennel Club currently has 15 members from the Amherst and Sackville, N.B area. For more information on the club or the upcoming show contact 661-6127.
