Paragliders from Atlantic Canada to take to Parrsboro skies
Into the great wide open
PARRSBORO: Keep your eyes towards the sky throughout the May long weekend for a colourful array of paragliders, hang gliders and many more winged air sports in and around Parrsboro as pilots take to the air for the 15th annual Atlantic Festival of Paragliders and Air Sports.
"There is a full schedule this year beginning with the annual kick-off meet and greet at the Glooscap Restaurant on May 16," Michael Fuller of Pegasus Paragliding said.
Fuller explained that during this year's festival pilots will be sticking close to the Parrsboro area on Saturday, May 17 and Sunday, May 18 to give people the opportunity to get better acquainted with the sport.
"We (pilots) want to give the public a chance to ask questions. Also on Saturday and Sunday there will be a bomb drop competition where from in the air the pilots will drop bags of flour aiming at a ground target. In addition to the bomb drop there will also be a ground competition where the best ground handling of a pilots wings will be determined," Fuller said.
Fuller, who has been in the air for more than 15 years, says ground handling is the most difficuly skill there is to paraglidingc
"The past couple of years haven't been good for the festival, the weather hadn't been the best," Fuller said. "Traditionally this is the best time of year paragliding and hang gliding."
Fuller said they are looking at having 20 pilots from all over the Maritimes and one from Quebec coming to Parrsboro to take part in the weekend.
The paragliding festival will begin with the meet and greet at the Glooscap restaurant Friday evening (May 16) and continuing through the weekend ending on Monday, May 19.
Flight schedules will be available at the Bouillabaisse Cafe on Saturday and Sunday mornings to see where pilots are flying that day.
Fuller encourages anyone in the area throughout the weekend to grab a picnic lunch and join where the pilots are flying and come be a part of this exciting weekend from May 16 to May 19.
