TRURO, N.S. - Nova Scotia MP Bill Casey has handed Mexico's ambassador to Canada roughly 100 letters of support for imprisoned Canadian Brenda Martin.
The Independent MP for Cumberland-Colchester-Musquodoboit Valley got the feedback after launching a public letter-writing campaign two weeks ago.
Casey knew going into the personal meeting Wednesday in Ottawa with Emilio Goicoechea Luna that it would not result in Martin's freedom.
But he wanted to express his constituents' concerns about her emotional and physical health.
Next, he intends to arrange direct contact with other senior Mexican and Canadian officials.
Casey said he's going to continue to seek a political resolution.
The ambassador told him the criminal case could be resolved in three to four months if there are no further delays.
''But even with the time frame, it could be drug out and extended, and Brenda Martin is in no shape to have a delay,'' he said.
Martin, 51, of Trenton, Ont., was detained by Mexican authorities in February 2006 for alleged involvement in a $60-million pyramid investment scheme involving 15,000 people in dozens of countries.
