PARRSBORO - Getting active and developing leadership skills for women involved in sport and physical activity was the focus of a workshop held in Parrsboro recently.

The Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women and Sport and Physical Activity (CAAWS) is a program within the Chignecto-Central Regional School Board (CCRSB) that consists of a series of professional and development sessions that have been designed for women by women.

Parrsboro Regional High Schools (PRHS) physical education teacher Charlene Smith, along with Amelia Cox with CCRSB, active healthy living consultant Sue Stevenson, assistant sport animator Tracy Murray and Parrsboros Health and wellness coordinator Linda McPhee hosted the workshop for 12 girls from PRHS Grades 10 to 12 providing them with skills to become role models for other female students.

Its a great way to turn girls into leaders within our school, said Smith. After this workshop these girls will have the skills to organize school sports activities and help get others active.

The half-day session is designed to blend theory with practical applications and provide an opportunity for women working or volunteering in the sport or active living communities, recreation field or school system to share experience, reflect on ideas and apply specific techniques in becoming more physically active.
