FLORENCEVILLE, N.S. A volunteer firefighter who was seriously injured fighting a blaze in Cape Breton on the weekend faces a long recovery and may never work again.

Frank Hurley, 59, has been with the Florence Volunteer Fire Department for about 10 years.

He will spend six weeks in traction in hospital before facing an extended period of in-home care.

Hurley was injured in a house fire near Little Pond early Sunday that fire officials say was deliberately set.

Hurley and other firefighters were heading down to the basement of the burning home when he fell.

Hurleys wife, Ann Marie Hurley, said Monday shes angry her husband was injured by such a malicious act.

The person or persons who did this should know the hardship, pain and suffering caused not only to Frank, but to his family, she said. If the fire hadnt been set, he wouldnt have been in that situation.
