AMHERST - Video games have always been a big part of Kirk and Bree Dollmont's lives, but recently they've been working on turning their hobby into a business.
The Dollmonts are getting ready for the opening of their new business. Gamers Lair will be located at 81 A Church St. It will be a place for customers to get together and play the latest and greatest games, either online or off, explained Kirk.
"You get a bunch of people together and basically kill time," he said.
Gamers Lair is slated for a Feb. 1 opening, but in the meantime the Dollmonts are busy setting up and getting their equipment together.
The shop will have four networked and online-ready computers to start out with. As well as a 37 inch LCD TV with your choice of gaming consoles and a large selection of games. They even have a copy of Rock Band and Guitar Hero for all the closet rock stars out there.
"Tried the drums from Rock Band last night, it's not easy," he said.
Eventually each console will have its own station set up complete with TV and couch, explained Dollmont.
They're also thinking of using a report card incentive system to help encourage kids coming into the store to keep their grades up. This means that kids will get free playtime depending on their grades. The higher the grades, the longer the free play time.
"The last thing I want to do is be responsible for killing some kids education," he said.
The Dollmonts are originally from Edmonton but awhile ago they decided it was time for a change.
They travelled extensively around Canada and even spent several months in Europe. But it wasn't until their travels took them to Amherst that they decided on a place to settle down. They took ownership of their new house New Year's day.
"We hit Amherst and we were like, you know what, this is home,"
It's a good place to raise our daughter, he explained.
