AMHERST - The Amherst Stadium will finally receive the major facelift everyone's been waiting for, as construction workers will work around the clock next week in order to replace the front of the building.
The construction and renovations will force the suspension of all scheduled events, including the indoor walking program, from Monday, Jan. 14, to Wednesday, Jan. 16.
"Basically what they're doing is replacing the infrastructure at the front of the building, including the glass and the frame, and putting new walls in its place," said Roger MacIsaac, the Director of Community & Economic Development for the Town of Amherst.
To do the job properly, MacIsaac says they need to remove the glass, the boards and the netting from the front of the ice surface, then cover the front quarter of the rink with sheathing and tarps to guarantee the ice surface is well protected.
"That will allow them to put the basic wall structure in place," said MacIsaac. "Then they can put the mechanical and electrical aspects in place and get on with their finished work in the offices, the new foyer and the ticket booth."
A three-day shutdown was in the cards from the beginning said MacIsaac.
"This is an expected closure," said MacIsaac. "We said from day one that we would be shutting down anywhere from 48 to 72 to 84 hours."
MacIsaac said the original plan was for the Stadium to close from Tuesday, Jan. 8, to Friday, Jan. 11.
"But we moved that ahead until Monday," said MacIsaac "So we're right in the ballpark of the time we thought we would be at this point in the construction."
This is the only planned shutdown in store for the Stadium.
"Part of the construction plan is upgrading a number of our electrical boxes," said MacIsaac. "So there may be a half and hour shut down or an hour shut down at some point in time, depending on how long it takes to transfer power from one box to another.
